Blog Post 10

The pictures of how to use an EpiPen is useful to my presentation because it shows how simple it is to use this medicine.  It shows that teachers would easily be able to use them in the event of an emergency.

a.     Discuss how allergies are a part of many children’s lives.
b.     Child caretakers should be prepared or severe allergic reactions with children.
2.              Context and Background

b.     Children don’t understand their bodies like an adult so it is important for parents to be prepared.
c.     Caretakers are in charge of their keeping the child safe, so they must be trained in how to handle reactions.
3.              Proposal
a.     Parents should inform school teachers and administration about possible allergies
b.     All caretakers should take classes on how to properly use an epi pen for effectiveness.
c.     Schools should take steps to prevent reactions such as banning nuts from a school.
                                               i.     Peanuts are the most common allergy in children
d.     Nurses should be allowed to give Benadryl to students who have a reaction in school.
                                               i.     Medicines should not be given out without permission slip form parents
ii.     Reactions can be severe enough to need immediate attention
e.     Students of a certain age should be allowed to carry medicine and epi pens on their person for protection
f.      These steps would allow the prevention of allergic reactions in school.
                                               i.     It would allow teachers and administration to be prepared for the worst.
ii.     It is a good approach because it makes parents feel comfortable leaving their child that has allergies in a school under supervision of teachers
iii.     It allows teachers to be more comfortable with taking students with allergies n field trips without having to worry about have a life-threatening situation.

Solution 1)
Children should carry an epi pen with them at all times. This will allow them to care for themself when they have an allergic reaction. These pens allow the child to no longer have to rely on others in extreme emergency situations. However, the epi pen is not always one hundred percent effective.  The effectiveness of the pen is determined by the extremity of the reaction. Some parents do not allow their children to have the responsibility of carrying an epi pen because they are very expensive and they don't want the pens to be lost.

Solution 2)
Children should fill out a medical form for the school districts to be aware of the child's diet restrictions. This allows all teachers and administration to be aware of the foods that the child can not consume. Also, this allows teachers to be aware of the possibility of events that could happen when an reaction takes place during a field trip. However, the down side is that a teacher may not always remember all of their students restrictions. Some people may object to this solution because parents do not want others knowing all of their child's information.

Solution 3)
Lastly, school nurses should be allowed to give children Benadryl in order to help a student in the event of a reaction. When an allergic reaction happens, children's throats can swell closed. This causes children not to be able to breathe or eat. Benadryl allows the swelling to go down and helps fix the reaction.  Some children may also have an allergic reaction to the Benadryl.

My Hypothesis

The topic I am choosing to discuss is Food Allergies in Children.  I chose this topic because I am a one to have bad food allergies.  I've noticed that people tend to think that everyone reacts the same way to an allergic reaction.  Through my research, I have found this not to be true.  Everyone reacts in different ways.  I am planning on providing information on different signs to be looking for and different ways to be tested for these allergies.
My hypothesis is not completely formatted the way I would like it to be; however, I do have a few ideas.  I would like the reader to understand that allergies effect different people in different ways.  I am still working on a way to put that into a correct hypothesis format.
I will use facts from my sources to convince my reader because many of the articles I have read talked about the different ways kids can react and the different signs to look for.  I have also found many articles that discuss ways to be tested for these allergies.
Facts that I still need is just more evidence that not everyone reacts the same way.  I have found a few articles on this topic, but I need more to truly support my hypothesis.

Blog Number Four

During my research, I have found that my topic is very common throughout all races, genders, and ethnicities.  No one is objective to having a food allergy.  I found out that allergies can be passed on genetically.  I had no idea that this was even possible. I found this very interesting.   I still need to find out more about how allergies are tested.  With more sources, I hope to be able to find out how accurate these tests are and I hope that I find more sources with evidence.

Research Blog

Researching my topic was quite difficult.  I found that I may need to consider finding a new topic to be able to further my research to have enough information for my topic.  I found that the words "farm shows" worked way better than "livestock shows".  This truly surprised me because I have never heard a show referred to as a farm show.
There are very few sources related to my chosen topic.  I was pretty surprised however because being an agriculture major, I tend to hear about this topic frequently.
The approaches all of the sources took on my topic were related more towards animal cruelty.  They were all about the same thing and whether humans mistreat our animals.
I sorted through my sources by narrowing the years to where it was not as spread out over a long period of time.  I tried to keep my search within 5 years of our current 2014 year.  I also sorted through my sources by checking the box for academic journals.  I chose to do this so that I would be ensured to have credible sources.

It's Show Time!

Over my high school career, I found that I have a love for agrictulture.  I wasn't able to stock show my whole life, but I was given the opportunity to show animals my junior and senior year.  I have a love for animals and agriculture as a whole.  I noticed that children who stock show learn the keys to success in life.

When owning livestock and show animals, is safety a concern?
What can childen learn from working with show animals?
How much does it cost to show?
Does stock showing affect the outcome of a child to an adult?
Can the skills learned through showing animalss translate to other areas in life?
How much time and effort is put into owning show animals?

Stock shows are very important for those who love agriculture.  It allows children to understand how animals work and how agriculture is used in the World.  People who care about stock shows tend to have a love for agriculture and animals.  I believe that stock shows affect the World.   Children raise animals that eventually end up as food to feed the people all across the Nations.  Without Livestock Shows, the beef and pork industries would not have near as much meat available.
I am researching the importance of stock shows because I want to find out how it affects the success of children in order to help readers understand the importance of animals and agriculture.
